Yvonne Peart, 73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 25, 2021. She left behind a myriad of stuff for her daughter who has no idea what to do with it. If you’re looking for 2 extremely large TVs from the 90s, a large ceramic stork (I think), an umbrella/cane stand, a toaster oven (slightly used) or even a VCR player (still in working condition), you should wait the appropriate amount of time and get in touch. Tomorrow would be fine! (I am kidding people!).
This is not an ad for an estate sale, but an obituary for a great Woman, Mother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Friend, Mentor, Advisor, Supporter, Advocate and Cheerleader who was born on May 3, 1948, in Grantham, Jamaica, the daughter of the late Egbert and Emiline Peart.
She leaves behind an exceedingly rare family that she was immensely proud of. Yvonne was world-renowned for her patience, not holding back her opinion and a knack for telling it like it is. She always told you the truth even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear.
The collective “we” were told many times how she had to walk for miles in the “hot” sun to get to school, so suck it up. Whatever it was! With that said, she was genuine to a fault, a pussy cat at heart (or lioness) and yet she sugar-coated nothing.
These words of encouragement, wisdom, and sometimes comfort, kept us in line, taught us the “school of hard knocks” and gave us something to pass down for generations to come.
My mom was the strongest woman I’ve ever met. She wasn’t afraid of anyone or anything. She was a fierce Mama Bear!
She was a “master” in the kitchen. She believed in overcooking everything until it chewed like rubber so you would never get sick because by the time the meal was served all germs were killed. Freezing germs also worked, so by Friday my school sandwiches were hard and chewy, but totally germ free. I quickly learned the art of using a napkin. If anyone would like a copy of her homemade gravy or roast beef recipe, I would suggest you actually pass.
For many years Yvonne worked at the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington, D.C. It suited her servant heart. She said she did it because of a promise she made to her mom, “Mama”. She used to always say: “Do what’s right and do what’s good. Be kind and help others. The world can always use one more kind person. And, if you can take it one step further, please do it for people your grandmother’s age.”
Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
She will be sorely missed and survived by her daughter, Trudy-Ann Farnum; sisters: Neddicent Lewis and Eula Henderson; brother: Newton Peart; nieces: Caron Maragh, Monique Uter and Natasha Sterling; nephews: Garrett Burnett and Okeeto Peart; cousins: Thelma Halsall, Eulith (Sue) Austin, Gerald Pinnock and Brenton Burnett. My Mom’s heart was big enough to welcome honorary family members along the way. These include Waltreece Carrethers-Maragh, Debby Brayant Jackson and a host of cousins, relatives, and dear friends. All whom loved her dearly and will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent) and unending love and caring.
She was preceded in death by her sister Roslyn Gordon, brother Voldie Peart, and beloved pets Susie, Junior and Duncan.
