On December 28, 2023, Yun Chin Kim passed away surrounded by her loving daughters, grandchildren, and family. She was 85 years old. Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1938, Yun, lived a very full and impactful life after moving to the United States. From her 20’s through her elder years, she led the way for her Korean community as an entrepreneur and businesswoman. She was a successful beautician with her own beauty salon in Capital Plaza, Landover Hills, MD. She then became the first Korean woman to manufacture tofu in Washington D.C. in the 80’s. Ms. Kim opened Sam Sung Tofu Company and later opened Sam Sung Produce Company. She went on to build several ventures in the food & hospitality and retail industries. She was a generous and loyal mother who provided a superb and privileged life for her children.
More than anything, Yun wore the name “grandma” with most pride. She not only left behind her son John M. Herald, two daughters, Sonya K. Williams and Tanya K. Salazar, her son-in-law, Dwight Williams, but also 6 beautiful grandchildren in order of birth, Kailey Campbell, Chloe Campbell, Avery Powell, Kendall Williams, London Powell, and Candace Williams. Her grandchildren miss her dearly, as there are countless memories and stories they shared with their grandmother throughout their lives. She is also survived by her brother, Chul Kim and family, extended cousins, and beloved friends.
She is preceded in death by both her parents, mother, Jung Sun Kim (Lim) and father, Pal Lim Kim. Nearing the end of her life as she battled dementia, Yun was deeply cared for by her daughters, Sonya and Tanya, and their families. She passed away peacefully in the arms of those that loved her.
