Dr. William Winter of Colesville Maryland died December 15 at Sunrise of Silver Spring after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer two months earlier. Born in Uniontown Pennsylvania, he was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Phillips Winter and Letitia Patterson Clark Winter; his wife, Emmy Lou Collins Winter; his brother, Harry Clark Winter; and his son, James Wesley Winter. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and John Oliver of Laurel and four grandchildren, Evan, Shannon, Andrew and Mary Oliver.
Bill was a very active and involved member of his church serving as Lay Leader, Church Historian, Methodist Men’s Club Chaplain and in numerous other roles. He was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 473 where he mentored 39 boys to the rank of Eagle Scout in his 40 years of service. Professionally, William P. Winter, PhD, taught and conducted research at The Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease in Washington DC; also serving as Deputy Director of the Center. Prior to moving to Maryland, he was an Associate Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan. An award-winning philatelist, avid genealogist, skilled woodworker, and armchair student of theology and history, he had no shortage of hobbies and interests. He was a caring and loving father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Colesville United Methodist Church followed by the funeral service at 11:30 am. Burial will be at a later date at Colesville Cemetery.
