Thurston being an  actual Rocket Scientist, I once posed a very layman question to him at a family gathering where as if a vehicle traveling at light speed were to suddenly turn on their headlights, what would an observer witness?  Would the light just be there in front of the vehicle or perhaps envelope it? As usual in pondering, he removed his reading glasses and donned his thinking glasses and gave me that much paternal and patient gaze of his and rewarded me replying that this was a very thoughtful question. Which for just a moment made me feel a closeness to an intellect that I should reach for. I hope Thurston, that since, I have not let you down. James.


If this is the family of my friend Thurston whose wife is Nina and daughter Anna, I am so very sorry for your loss. It would please me immensely to hear from you this many years later if you please. I’ve never known anyone even remotely like Thurston.  He was truly one of the kindest, most fascinating and most loyal souls I’ve ever been blessed to know.  Thurston’s decades of loving and completely unwavering devotion to Sensei and the DC Aikikai (now Aikido Shobukan Dojo) can’t be over-stated.  I will miss him greatly, especially any time I hear Irish music and find myself near a dart board.  Thurston, I raise a parting glass (of single malt) to you! 💞

Back in the early 1970s, you were going to San Francisco and asked me if I wanted anything.  I asked you to buy me a copy of Ferlinghetti's poems at City Lights bookstore.  You brought me back a signed copy.    I'm sorry you're gone.


Thank you Thurston for mixing my first martini and standing behind your statement that I would love it. I did indeed love it and will always remember the smile on your face after watching me take my first sip. Your engaging personality will be missed.
