I am so grateful to have visited Stan one Friday in January at the Hebrew Home with cookies and tulips for Shabbat. We talked about my upcoming 3 month trip overseas and his memories of all the great trips he and Sue had taken before he fell and injured his back which landed him there, at the Home. 

We go back to early JPDS days - many long and stressful Board meetings. He was so dedicated to Hannah, her future and the future of the school. I am glad he was able to see both thrive and come into “adulthood “. He will be missed by many friends but by no one so deeply as his beloved Hannah and Sue.

I knew Stan for three decades, and admired him that whole time.  To me he was a paradigm of the human values I most treasured. Kind, thoughtful, funny, piercingly intelligent, self-deprecating and modest, intellectually curious, profoundly decent, hard-working, loving to his family, committed to his community, and deeply founded in his religion and tradition. A man in full. What more can one want? And now, he is to be remembered as that complete example of what it means to be a fully realized person: respected in his work, loved by his family, admired by his friends, and treasured by his community. What a legacy to leave.

He spent his work life trying to make the world a better place for young people, to give them the opportunities and power that education provides. Surely there are tens of thousands, if not more, students who - all unknowingly - received the benefits of his work, and whose lives were changed as a result. He was unstinting in his participation with his community, and overflowing with love for Sue and Hannah, and his older children. You could see it. An intellectual powerhouse, he was unpretentious and unassuming. He let the force of his ideas, thoughtfully and carefully expressed, speak for him. And yet he was funny, with a wonderful sense of humor,  a ready laugh and his unforgettable wry smile. 

I will miss his thoughtful comments and observations, his humor, his charming smile and chuckle, his kind attention to his friends, his deep voice in speech and song. May his memory be for a blessing for us all.
