Richard A. Frankel, 86, of Washington, D.C., passed away from cancer on September 29, 2024. Richard was born on August 8, 1938, in New York City and was a husband, father, and dedicated academic. He graduated from Columbia University in the Class of 1958, where his love for mathematics blossomed, and he remained a generous supporter university throughout his life. Richard received his PhD in
Chemistry from Harvard University in 1970.
Known for his wide-ranging knowledge and intellectual curiosity, Richard had a sincere passion for exploring the world. He took great joy in understanding the meaning behind what he observed and experienced, always eager to share his insights with others.
Richard cherished his time with his son, Steven, often attending Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals games together. A lifelong New York Mets fan, he reveled in the statistics and nuances of the game. But his most enthusiastic support was for his son Steven's ice hockey and soccer teams. Dick's life was also enriched by the companionship of his beloved Portuguese Water Dogs, who brought him much happiness.
He is survived by his wife, Sheryl Segal; his stepdaughter, Tanya Uyeda; his son, Steven Frankel; and daughter-in-law, Shannon Fennell. Richard's sincerity and commitment to his family will be sorely missed.
A funeral service to celebrate Richard's life will be held on Monday,October 7, 2024 in the Fabrangen Section of the Garden of Remembrance in Clarksburg MD.
