Mrs. Kundu  loved talking and laughing with her duaghters' friends back when they were in college. I'm sorry Krishna's husband Leo couldn't be at the funeral  since I know that Mrs. Kundu, as did we all, enjoyed Leo's larger than life happy spirit and amazing gift for conversation and jokes.

We all know that Mrs. Kundu was a devoted mother and wife and an excellent cook and gardener. She had the ability to bring plants back from near death with her amazing green thumb. She also seemed to have a special sensitivity; she said that her garden didn't need to be weeded; in fact, it was better for them to be untended because they had lives of their own.

I remember her for her love of running before it was popular, her social spark; she loved to get together and talk and play cards and I'm glad she was able to come out to Wisconsin with Krishna a few years ago for Christmas. I was able to make dal for her and received kindly praise from her for it when she said-- "this is good." 

I also enjoyed many conversations with her about her past, especially her reflections on university life, their many global travels and semesters and years abroad in Puerto Rico, Japan, Chile and India. , She especially enjoyed living in Michigan when Mr. Kundu was a postdoc at the University of Michigan and remembered those years with great fondness filled with dinner parties and bridge. Rina and Krishna remember fondly sitting on the bed and watching their mother dress for parties, fascinated by the beautiful silk saris and jewels.

As you all already know Mr. Kundu was a world-famous professor of Astronomy, known for his expertise on solar physics and radio astronomy. She occasionally reminisced about his courtship of her and how he would get mad at her for wanting an ice cream cone every time they went to the movies. Again? He would say.

My mother was a strong woman.  My memories of her include moments of conversation, laughter, and tears. She was always there for us making a home  full of good food and beautiful spaces. I will miss her presence in my life.
