Mary Alberta Hawkins the youngest of two children and the daughter of the late Mamie Hawkins was born May 21, 1930. Mary received her education in the Maryland Public School System. After graduating in 1947 from Fredrick Douglas High School in Upper Marlboro, MD she attended the Atlantic Business College and Cortez Peters Business College in Washington, DC from 1952-1954 in Washington, DC. Mary entered Federal employment in 1949, working for the Bureau of Engraving until transferring to the Dept of Army at the Pentagon in 1954. It was during this time she met Francis S. Johnson and the two remained in a long-term relationship until the mid-1980s. This union produced one child Sterling Hawkins. After retiring from Federal Service in 1980, she went on to work part-time as a personal care aide for the Maryland Dept. of Health and Human Services from 1982 to 1984. In 1985 she volunteered for the American Red Cross of the Greater Chesapeake region. In 1986 she volunteered with the Prince George’s County Library Literary Program, working as an English tutor. Mary was also an amateur photographer and up until 2011 enjoyed photographing events at the senior retirement community where she lived. A devout Catholic, Mary served in several churches throughout her life. She leaves to cherish her memory a son and daughter-in-law, Sterling and Merlene Hawkins, 2 grandsons, Matthew and Markel Hawkins and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
