November 4, 1942 – August 28, 2018
On Tuesday, August 28, 2018 Judith “Judy” Simmons was called home to be with her lord and savior Jesus Christ. She was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on November 4, 1942 to the Late Joe and Edna (Morris)-Long. She was the youngest and only daughter in her family.
Judith was affectionately known as, Judy, Miss Judy and after her grandchildren was born everyone called her “Granny”. Judy loved to dance, party, and listen to good jazz, travel and meet new and interesting people. She never met a stranger, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School, and Westinghouse High School in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She married the late Cederic Simmons and from that union had two daughters, Shelley and Ronna. She later divorced and moved to Washington, DC in the late 1960’s. She was employed at Wonder Bread Bakery as a Bakers Helper. She retired from the Bakers and Confectionary Union after 26 years. After retirement she held various positions with catering companies in the DMV area. One of her proudest memories was she was instrumental in the grand opening of the Georgetown Dean and Deluca gourmet store. She was a very dedicated and hard worker and she continued to work until she became disabled at the age of 62.
Judy met her best friend and lifelong partner Henry Lester in the late 1970’s. They loved to travel around the U.S., and abroad. They regularly played golf and bowled in a bowling league for many years. In their later years they enjoyed watching various sporting events especially basketball and golf. The biggest thrill of all was nurturing the grandchildren they cherished spoiled and loved.
Judy had a soft spot and major affection for the families many dogs over the years; Boomer, Buffy, Frisky, baby Tina, and present day K.C., Bella, and Sasha.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Joseph Morris Sr. and cousin Sylvia Dotson; survived by daughters; Shelley A. Simmons of Burtonsville, MD, Ronna L. Field (Alan Field) of Burtonsville, MD, Companion Henry Lester, grandchildren, Monica Keith (Nathaniel Keith) of Augusta, GA, Alexa Simmons, Matthew Field, Jason Simmons, Ryan Field, David Field. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends to cherish her memory.
