Born September 20, 1931 on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was one of a set of twins.
She came to “the States” to continue her study of nursing at the Washington Missionary College (later Columbia Union College, now Washington Adventist University) and completed her R.N. degree. Shortly after that she met her husband, Edwin, and they moved into Takoma Park and what would be “Home” for nearly 50 years. They raised two daughters, Linda and Julie.
After her husband passed in 2007, Joan moved into the senior community of Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, MD where she spent her remaining 15 years.
Joan leaves behind her two daughters-- Linda J. Wilson (Michael Reeves) of Riverdale Park, MD and Julie O’Loughlin (Bruce O’Loughlin) and one grandson Robert of Dumfries, VA, her younger sister Phyllis Simons (John T. Simons) of Silver Spring, MD, niece Karen and nephew John, and her nieces Susan Cottrell (Ken) and Margaret Stoots (Ed).
Her twin sister, Leelah June Meeks of Berlin, Maryland, predeceased her on May 14, 2022.
Visitation to be held at the Hines Rinaldi Funeral Home at 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD on Saturday, May 28 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Burial will be at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd., Crownsville, MD on Thursday, June 2 at 10:45 am.
