Hui Yan Lee was born on November 24th, 1942, in the city of Toi Shan, Guangdong Provence, China to Raphael Lee and Sau-Ching Louie. Due to political turmoil, Hui moved to Hong Kong in 1957 and eventually immigrated to the United States in 1971. He returned to Hong Kong in 1973 to marry Fung Lin Cheung on June 3, 1973, and then came back to the States. They have three daughters: Elaine, Ellen and Alice. Mr. Lee worked as a head barbeque chef for Trader Vic’s in the 1980’s until he retired in 1996. After retiring, he dedicated his time to care for his family and make sure his family, friends, and guests were fed. As head of the Lee household, he was famous for impromptu cookout sessions after church or any given Saturday. The house specialty was barbeque spare ribs, soy sauce chicken, and steaks. He was happiest knowing he could feed all his guests multiple meals at any given time. Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, Janet Fung-Lin Lee, three daughters, Elaine, Ellen, and Alice Lee, his older sister, Kit Jing Lee, two younger sisters, Choy Yuk and Wai Ling Lee, and numerous nieces and nephews.
