Glenda Lee Johnson Thompson was born in Michigan, July 26, 1938 to Willard and Olive Johnson. After graduating high school, when she was 18, she moved to DC. There she met Larry Thompson of Silver Spring, MD. They were married November 26, 1960. They first lived in two different houses in Silver Spring and had three children, Larry "Nick" Jr, in 1961, Les in 1962, and Cherie in 1966. In 1970, they moved to Oak Hill Farm on Oak Hill Rd., in Silver Spring. The farm was previously owned by Larry's grandfather, Herbert Thompson. In 1971, they had their fourth child, Pamela.
Glenda worked very hard on their real "working" farm where she and Larry raised their four children, grew acres of corn, many other vegetables and fruits, had cows, pigs, horses, chickens, cats, dogs, and geese. They owned and operated a small produce stand on New Hampshire Avenue, where Glenda worked endlessly through the year, even selling Christmas trees in December. While the farming life was very hard work and not the most lucrative business, her family was "rich" with great rewards, experiences, and love.
In the early 1980's, when her children were older, Glenda got a job at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory as an administrator in their computing department. This allowed Glenda to have more independence, great benefits, and a retirement plan! While she worked at APL, Larry sold real estate. They were able to take annual trips with friends to the Caribbean. She retired from APL after 20 years and then was able to take 2-3 month trips every winter to Marco Island, FL with Larry and they bought a "vacation" home in Atlantic, VA, near Chincoteague Island.
More importantly, Glenda became a grandmother! In 1993, her first grandchild, Chelsey, was born. Five more grandchildren followed over the years...Tara, Kyle, TC, Casey, and "Little" Les. Being Grandma, Grammy, Gma, and/or Gram, turned out to be the best thing in her life! In July 2022, Glenda became GiGi to Emily, her first great grandchild. Since the moment each of these children were born she loved them with all of her heart!
Glenda was a truly a special person. She survived hard times on the farm, a heart attack in her early 60's, the deaths of her parents, husband, and 4 of her 5 siblings, made it unscathed through the Covid years, and endured the major struggles of Parkinson's Disease for nearly 15 years. You wouldn't know she ever struggled with anything. When talking about Glenda with family, friends, caregivers, and even acquaintances, they all say how special she was and how they loved her. Everyone loved Glenda. Her prayers of living the rest of her life at her home on the farm were answered. She died peacefully there, with her last days spent with her children and grandchildren.
Glenda is survived by her sons’, Larry "Nick" Thompson, Jr. (Karen) and Leslie Thompson (Sherry); her daughters', Cherie Conrad (Terry) and Pamela Thompson; grandchildren, Chelsey. Terry "TC", Jr., Kyle, Casey, Tara and Les; and one great-grandchild, Emily. She was the sister of the late Clare, Vernon, Barbara, Judy and surviving sister, Sharon, and aunt to their surviving children.
A visitation for Glenda will be held Sunday, October 22, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Ashton United Methodist Church, 17314 New Hampshire Avenue, Ashton, Maryland 20861, followed by a celebration of life memorial service at 12:30 PM.
