Although  memories of my early childhood in Hong Kong have mostly faded, I remember snippets of my Popo (maternal grandmother) taking care of me so my parents could both work. She moved to the States a few years earlier than we did, but we were reunited in Maryland where we eventually lived 10 minutes from each other. For every holiday, we gathered at her house where she always cooked a huge feast for all of us and baked delicious cakes (like the sponge cake and the cream rolls you can find at an Asian bakery.) She was the kind of loving grandmother who baked a lot and knitted sweaters for all of her grandchildren. In fact, I still have the rainbow cardigan my 8-year-old self wore all the time around the house which I have bequeathed to my daughter and made her keep it for her future daughter). Even when she was reprimanding us, she was never truly mad  at us and always with a smile. As we grew older and moved away, I saw her less and less. Eventually when she moved into the nursing home, I managed to visit her once a year at best. Even though her memory was starting to go and she no longer recognized many of us, Popo was always smiling and even hid bananas behind a painting  in her room to save for us when we visited.  A couple of times when I visited, she would call out my Chinese name but I wasn’t sure if she really recognized me or if she just remembered my name. Sadly I didn’t get to see her in the past few years due to Covid, but I’m relieved she is resting in peace and will always remember my kind and loving Popo. 

She was a kind, sincere and devoted woman. She always smile when I see her.. She loves to bake and needling.  I will remember her smiling face forever!
