I knew Barry as a colleague and mentor in the field of legal ethics.  Barry was the model of a "lawyer's lawyer," always conscious of human frailties and always generous, circumspect and insightful in his perspective.  What a gentle and smart soul.  The world was a better place with him in it and anyone who knew him benefitted from his knowledge, wisdom and kindness.  What a lawyer.  What a person.  What an inspiration.  What a model.  And, now, what a loss.

When I joined Crowell & Moring some years ago no one was more welcoming and helpful than Barry, and this did not change over the years. He was always there to help out with legal issues, or just to stop and chat. I trusted his judgment and envied his intellect. Barry had a quiet dignity about him that was an example for all of us. I will miss him.

I am the least qualified person to be commenting here. I probably only ever had a handful of conversations with Barry but what always struck me about him was how amazingly supportive and inclusive he was. I will miss him.

Barry touched my life and my family for over 45 years. We were more than lawyer/secretary, we were a team. He was my Perry Mason and I was his Della  Street.  Barry loved the law and he was respectful of those who worked with him. He encouraged me to be all I could be and was supportive when we no longer worked together. 

Our connection remained even after I retired. I always looked forward to our chats over the years when we would share updates about our children, his job, and my retirement. 

Barry is a patch in my quilt of life that will forever have a special place in my memory and my heart.

It was an honor to work with Barry.   He had a calming and relaxing presence in business and personal discussions.  I always looked forward to the opportunities to work with Barry every year.  I mourn the immediate loss and lost future opportunities.  I am grateful for the time we had.

Barry, I wish I would have had time to share some thoughts with you before you passed so suddenly yesterday.

You, Mary, Sara and Abby have an everlasting place in our hearts.  For more than 35 years of friendship we've shared the joys of family, friends, the occasional down and the numerous ups, your strong  poker skills, your sense of humor and all kinds of other memories.

The news of your passing has burned a small part of my soul.  You'll be sorely missed by all but the memories of so many times together by ourselves or with our wives and kids will never fade.

I first met Barry about 13 years ago and quickly learned what we all now know so well about Barry-  he was smart, hard-working, unscrupulous and someone who cared deeply about the people and institutions (including Crowell) he committed to.  He was always interested in learning and teaching and will be sorely missed. 

I worked with Barry at Davis, Graham & Stubbs in 1986-1995 and then I came here to Crowell.  I remember the Davis, Graham & Stubbs picnic at your house. We were having so much fun until my son had an allergic reaction to the cut grass.  I often ran into Barry here at Crowell and we would talk about retiring and how much longer were we going to be here.  I always asked about Mary and his children (who were little when I saw them).  He will sorely be missed.  He was such a nice guy.

Barry is uniquely special to me and impacted my life greatly.  He hired me and had confidence in me at a time in my life when I truly needed someone in my corner.  He patiently mentored me.   Always the professor.  He sincerely cared about my professional success and my personal happiness.  He never stopped asking how my "boys" were  and neither could believe that the boys he met as toddlers were now in college.  When I remarried he came to my wedding.  Not as my boss, but as a friend to share life's celebrations.   I will never forget him and how fortunate I am to have crossed paths with him.    You three were the light of his life.   I know he will be missed terribly, but his impact is deep and he will always be with you.
