Andrew was born September 2nd, 1926 in Hubei, China. During China’s Civil War at the age of
18, he joined the Nationalist Army as the government of the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan. By the
persistent outreach and invitation of a friend, he attended a Christmas service in 1962 and heard a
sermon on Isaiah 53:6, “We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and
the LORD has laid on HIM the iniquity of us all.” He surrendered his life to the Lord that day. The following
year, he left his military position and began attending Taiwan Baptist Seminary.
On August 14, 1965, Andrew married the heaven-made match of his life, Lydia Yu-Hsin Shen,
who he was connected to through a missionary colleague, after exchanging 40 love letters. After
graduating from Taiwan Baptist Seminary in 1966, together with Lydia, he began his lifelong service as a
pastor sharing the gospel and preaching/teaching God’s words wherever he was, whenever he could. He
served as Senior Pastor at Tsim Sha Tsui Mandarin Baptist Church for 10 years, Immanuel Baptist
Church for 7 years, and Maryland Chinese Baptist Church for 13 years. After his retirement in 1998, he
continued to serve the Lord tirelessly as a visiting pastor in the Greater Washington DC area. Many were
inspired by his enthusiasm for God’s work and his unwavering simple faith.
Andrew was a faithful husband who loved his wife with a humble heart, a devoted father who
gave selflessly to his children and a loving grandfather who enjoyed sharing a meal with his grandchildren
with his handmade dough nugget soup.
Andrew is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lydia Shen; his daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and
Robert Deschak, Betty and San-Ming Hui, Faith and Eric Ruei; his son, Chang Shen; His grandchildren,
Alexander Chow, Zachary Chow, Samuel Hui, Victoria Chow, Benjamin Hui, Nicholas Ruei, Grace Ruei,
