Adolph Frank Zeman, aged 99, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024 in Silver Spring, MD. Born on July 17, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Frank Zeman and Kathryn Zeman (née Klincuch), Al grew up proudly in the “Bohemian” neighborhood outside Chicago.
Adolph, or Al by most who knew him, bravely served in the Navy on the Pacific Front during World War II. After returning home from the war he pursued his education under the GI Bill, graduating from Roosevelt College in 1949. He married Shirley Zeman (née Stanger) on September 29, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, and in July 1971 they moved to Colesville, MD where they raised their three children and various pets (always named after figures from ancient Rome or Greece). He worked as an investigator for the U.S. Treasury Department until his retirement at the age of 55 in 1980.
In retirement, Al embraced life to the fullest. He traveled extensively with Shirley and they often attended opera performances. He immensely enjoyed listening to Dixieland jazz, loved game nights with friends and remained an avid tennis player and loyal Minnesota Vikings fan, though he humorously referred to himself as the “KOD” (Kiss of Death) when rooting for his favorite teams. Known for his quick wit and love of storytelling, Al’s family and friends will fondly remember his “Adolphisms,” pun-filled humor, and devotion to “dobru rodina” (good family).
He is survived by his children Kathryn (David) Stone, Robert (Mary) Zeman, and Richard Zeman; grandchildren Jeffrey (Scott Farbish) Stone, Lauren (Kenzig) Rufino, and Kayleigh Zeman; great-grandchildren Scarlett Rufino and Caroline Rufino; and many cousins.
Family, friends, and others are invited to the Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD, at 11am on November 25th 2024 to reminisce and honor the life of Adolph.
