Born in Oakland, CA, to Olen Albon & Vireda McDonald, Terry grew up with strong values that guided him throughout his life. In 1964, he attended Boy’s State. He graduated from Sikeston High School in Sikeston, MO, before earning degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and Washington University in St. Louis.
Terry dedicated 34 years of his professional life as a bank examiner for the FDIC, where his integrity and diligence left a lasting impact. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserves from 1969 to 1996, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Barbara McDonald. He leaves behind a loving family: his son, Shawn McDonald of Seattle, WA; his daughter, Shannon Smith of San Antonio, TX, and her husband, Aaron; his cherished grandchildren, Colin, Atticus, and Madison; his brother, Gary McDonald (Carol); sister-in-law, Laurie Goodfellow (Lafe); and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will deeply feel his absence.
Beyond his career and military service, Terry was an active member of his community. He served as a trustee for his subdivision in University City, MO, contributed to the University of Missouri Alumni Association in Columbia, and found joy in his local word-lovers’ group, the Logophiles. He also held leadership roles in the American Legion and the 40 and 8 veterans' organizations, dedicating years to supporting fellow servicemembers.
Terry was a man of quiet strength, sharp wit, and boundless kindness. He valued honesty, hard work, and thoughtful planning, serving as a steadfast role model to his children and countless others he mentored. His humor was dry, his loyalty deep, and his integrity unwavering. He found happiness in simple pleasures-good conversation, live music, the beauty of a sunset-and believed in creating meaningful memories with those he loved.
In honoring Terry's life, he would encourage you to pause for a sunset, laugh with friends, enjoy live music or theatre, and most importantly, make time for those who matter most. Let his legacy be a reminder to live fully, love deeply, and always choose the honorable path.
He will be profoundly missed.
