Wilfred Smith, Mike, passed away April 7, 2020 after fighting a hard battle against COVID-19. Mike was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 29,1949. He was a graduate of Fair Park High School where he met his beautiful bride of over 50 years, Alice Reynolds Smith. After High School, he became a member of the United States Air Force Reserves; he went on to work 33 years for the Shreveport Fire Department and retired as Assistant Chief.
Mike is survived by his wife Alice and his 2 children, daughter Crystal Smith Lambert and her husband Eric, and son Darryl Smith and his wife Barbara; 5 grandchildren he loved and was very proud of, Piper Alysse Lambert Lasagna, husband Justin, Ireland Rose Lambert, Layton Lambert, Jenna Smith and Owen Smith; older brother Jim Smith, and younger sister Nancy Tibbit and husband Wayne; niece, Dana, and nephew, Paul, wife Tarisa, and child London Delia; uncle, who grew up like a brother to him, Fred Oursso and wife Jan; and Mike’s brother and sister- in- laws he treasured as his own since the day he began dating Alice. He loved them and all of their children, his nieces and nephews, very much. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carroll Hilman Smith and Odelia Smith, who he is certainly hugging in Heaven now.
Mike never met a stranger; he was a kind and generous man who spent his life caring for friends and family. He could fix just about anything; if there was not a traditional way to do something, he invented his own way. He was an air force jet engine mechanic, a fire fighter, a carpenter, a roofer, a carpet layer, a car mechanic, an at home chef, a photographer, a sometimes philosopher, a water-skiing coach, an unofficial sideline referee, and more; he was a man of many talents. He loved nature photography and was the longest standing member of The Shreveport Photographic Society, and through the years he held every office position. From his love of photography, he leaves behind a collection of amazing photographs and a list of wonderful friends. One of which he shared this passion of photography with, his best friend of over 40 years, Wayne Tabor.
While the family is greatly saddened by his unexpected passing, they are so very grateful for the time he spent, the lessons he taught, and the memories he leaves. They rejoice in knowing he will spend eternity in Heaven, and one day they will again be surrounded by his love, his humor, and his wisdom. As a long-time member of Summer Grove Baptist Church in Shreveport, Mike valued the friendship and support of his friends, New Beginnings Sunday School class, staff and teachers, as do his family.
Because of the crisis in our country at this time, the family is unable to hold the traditional funeral service honoring his life with friends and loved ones. A small graveside service will be held at Centuries on Mansfield Road, Shreveport Louisiana; a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a future date for all family and friends to attend.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of your sympathy, can be made by donating to the Memorial Fund honoring Mike (Wilfred) Smith, Go Fund Me memorial that has been created.
