Gene was born on October 4, 1925 in Merriam, Kansas and passed away on January 24, 2016 in Memphis, TN. He spent 26 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant and served in three wars: WWII, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring and realizing that retirement would not pay the bills, he started a second career as the manager of Shreveport’s Downtown Airport. While Dad loved his country and family, his greatest love was for his Lord and that love grew deeper the longer he lived. If the church doors were open, he was there, but his service went beyond rigid observance. He loved sharing his faith in Jesus Christ with others and would give the shirt off his back to meet a need. It’s comforting to know that Dad is in the presence of Jesus and holding Mom’s hand once again. So many additional aspects describe Dad. He had a desire to grow boys into men and one way that manifested itself was in his work with the Boy Scouts. He served scout troops in Bossier City and Shreveport for many years, mentoring, camping, and teaching life skills. He loved woodworking and would spend hours in his shop tinkering and creating. He was an engineer at heart and could fix or make anything. He could overhaul a car engine, build a home addition or repair an appliance. Dad passed along these skills to all of us. He could pinch a penny further than anyone (much to our dismay as kids) but we never lacked for anything, took vacations every year and were able to take advantage of higher education on his nickel. In retirement, Mom and Dad loved to travel and would spend months out of the year trekking all across the lower 48 and Alaska. Maine and Vermont were favorites in the summer and Tucson in the winter. Never short on words, Dad had dear friends all over the country. While absent in the body, his memory, legacy and soul continues.
Dad was preceded in death by his bride and our Mom, Joan McKee; his parents, Ross and Gladys McKee; brother, Harold Moore; son, Robert Michael McKee; and son-in-law, Jimmy Agostin.
Our hero will be sorely missed by his children, Michael and his wife Donna, Tim and his wife Clara, Tracy Agostin, and Kevin and his wife Ginger, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
