Rev. Robert Wilson Gordon, Sr. (Bob), age 90, was born on January 25, 1932 in Atlanta, GA and was called home to be with Jesus on May 13, 2022 in Shreveport, LA. He is survived by his precious wife of 66 years, Mildred Fortenberry Gordon. Four children, Tim Gordon (Susan), Bonnie Jones (Charlie), Steve Gordon (Lois), Bobby Gordon (Angie). 18 Grandchildren and 26 Great Grandchildren.
Bro. Bob is a graduate of Bob Jones University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He faithfully served as pastor of four churches: Zion Baptist in Coushatta, LA from 1956-1960. Mooringsport Baptist Church, Mooringsport, LA from 1960-1965. Caddo Heights Baptist Church, Shreveport, LA, from 1965-1978. West Hartselle Baptist Church from 1978-1997. After retirement, he also enjoyed serving as interim pastor of other churches in Morgan County, AL.
From a young age he loved sports, the outdoors, the sun, water, fishing, and swimming. Over a lifetime he probably swam over 2,000 miles. Countless hours and many fond memories were made with family and friends enjoying all kinds of water activities. One time a goose attacked him while swimming down the lake. He grabbed the goose by the neck and swam it to the shore. He told the goose the lake was big enough for both of them, then swam away leaving the goose to ponder this man who was bigger than life and who enjoyed life so much.
His plans to become a dentist drastically changed in college when he surrendered his life to follow Jesus Christ. The change in his life was obvious and he loved telling people about his newfound faith in Christ. This passion for Jesus, hunger for reading the Bible, and love for people led him to accept God’s call to pastor. In seminary, the inner and outer beauty of Mildred caught his eye. He prayerfully and persistently pursued her heart and eventually she said yes to be his lifetime companion and partner in ministry. For 66 years, they faithfully served the Lord together and joyfully cared for their ever-expanding family. He loved the Lord, he loved his family, he loved people, and he loved life!
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 11:00 AM. Location will be Woodridge Baptist Church, 850 E. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport, LA. Visitation at the same location will begin at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow the service at Centuries Memorial Park, Shreveport. Rev. Bobby Gordon, Jr. will be officiating, and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Woodridge Baptist Church designated to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for supporting international missionaries.
