Nelta Louise (Powell) Bowman, age 78, of Mooringsport, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Nelta was born June 4, 1942 in Marshall, Texas to Dorothy Louise Barton Powell and Richard C. Powell.
Growing up Nelta moved around the Central and Western United States because of her father’s job. The place she enjoyed living the most was Flagstaff, Arizona. She thought it was a beautiful place to live. Nelta enjoyed camping in Arkansas with her family, and attending Air Shows. She enjoyed attending activities with her grandchildren and always looked forward to the opportunity to spend time with them. Nelta always had a smile on her face, and never complained about anything. Her personality would brighten any room she walked in.
Nelta graduated from South High School in Bakersfield, with honors and was in the top ten percent of her gradating class. After high school she continued her education at Bakersfield Jr. College and Kearney State Teacher College.
Nelta was a bookkeeper by trade. She worked as a bank teller for a local bank in Shreveport. She also worked for Melton Truck Lines in the accounting department and Softdisk as an account payables/receivables clerk. After the birth of her two daughters, Nelta devoted her time to caring for her family and raising her children.
During Nelta's free time she enjoyed water aerobics, sewing, crocheting, and reading. She also loved traveling, and went on many cruises to Hawaii and Mexico with family and friends. Nelta loved visiting with her family, and always look forward to the family reunions. She will be greatly missed by her family, and friends.
Nelta is survived by her husband of 53 years, Bert C. Bowman; daughters Rhonda McMillon (Randy) of Longwood, Louisiana, and Katie Staton (James) of Grayson, Kentucky; sister Dian Callaway (Glenn) of Missouri; grandchildren Conner Staton (Emily), Kaitleigh Staton (Fiance Travis Tussey), Abbie McMillon (fiance Cole Meadows), Camren Staton (girlfriend Kaity Bender), Austin McMillon (girlfriend Tommi Daugherty); great grandchildren Ava Meadows, and Legend McMillon; nieces Cindi Bodine, Chris Stutzman (Jack) and a lifetime friend Joyce Witherwax.
Nelta was preceded in death by parents, and niece Kayla Mayberry.
A visitation for Nelta will be held Wednesday, March 3, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral service will occur Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 11:00am in the chapel at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108. Interment will take place in Centuries Memorial Park. Bro. Jim Gstohl will be officiating services. Honoring Nelta as pallbearers are Randy McMillon, James Staton, Conner Staton, Camren Staton, Austin McMillon, Cole Meadows and Travis Tussey.
The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice Care ( Bro. Jim, Mrs. Betty, Mark, RN, Amanda, RN, and Ms. Ann) and C&B Helping Hands (Natasha, Ronesha, Meka and Charmaine) for their compassion, and care they provided both Nelta and the family over the last several months.
