Services to honor the life of Melvin G. Guthrie, 72, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. The family will receive guests on Saturday evening between the hours of 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Melvin Guthrie, a native of Bald Knob, AR and a lifelong resident of Keithville, LA passed away on Thursday, February 03, 2011. He was at home and surrounded by those he loved.
When Melvin was honorably discharged from the military in 1960, he joined the Shreveport Police Dept. as a patrolman and ascended up through the ranks and was appointed head of Juvenile Division and later Narcotics Division and in 1980, Melvin served as interim Police Chief. While at the police department, Melvin graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. However, his proudest moment was when the other police officers named him Outstanding Police Officer of the year for 1984.
Melvin leaves behind his precious wife of 53 years, Louise Freppon Guthrie; three sons, Mark Guthrie and wife, Sherrie, Scott Guthrie and wife, Laurie, and Todd Guthrie; three grandsons, Austin, Harrison and Carter; two step-grandchildren, Jonathan Thibodeaux and Genna Thibodeaux; two brothers, Don Guthrie and wife, Carolyn and Malcom Barrentine and wife, Sherrie; sisters, JoAnn Fish and husband, Doug and Mary O’dell and husband, Clay, all of Arkansas.
