Lillie Helen Chance Johnson was born to August W. Chance and Martha Jane Clayton Chance on September 2, 1924 and was promoted to Heaven on Thursday, April 25, 2024 in Shreveport, LA. She passed peacefully in her sleep with her daughter, Diane at her bedside.
Helen, as she was known to most of her friends and family met the love of her life James Johnson and they were married on July 16, 1949. They were happily married for more than 70 years until James' passing on February 17, 2020. They are now reunited forever in Heaven.
They were unable to have any children biologically, so they chose to love three children through adoption. To her, they were just as much her children as those born to parents. She loved them unconditionally.
Helen worked for Southern Bell Telephone for a brief period, then spent the remainder of her working career at The Brewster Company, which later became WKM Wellhead. She retired in 1986 and then she and James spent many wonderful years traveling and camping all over the United States and parts of Canada. She loved to paint and has several paintings hanging in her home.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, James, by her parents, August Werber Chance and Martha Jane Clayton Chance, and by her eight siblings, Carrie Lou Attaway, Beulah Chance, Johnnie Chance, Charles Chance, Frank Chance, Clayton Chance, Tommy Chance and Paul Chance.
She is survived by her three children, Sherry Kissler of Omaha, NE, Gary L. Johnson and wife, Jackie of Blair, OK, and Diane Cole and husband, Tom of Shreveport. Mimi and Pawpaw as they are affectionately known have four grandchildren, Jereomy Frum and Michelle Frum, Cassandra Cole Marsh and husband, Terry, Thomas James Cole and wife, LaDonna. In addition, she has ten Great Grandchildren and three Great-Great Grandchildren.
We would like to thank the staffs of Amedisys Home Health Care and Christus Hospice for the great care they gave Helen during the last four years. We greatly appreciate all they did for her and us.
We will hold a memorial service for Helen on June 1, 2024 at Shreve City Baptist Church, 2810 Knight Street, Shreveport, LA at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in her name to your favorite church or charity.
