SHREVEPORT, LA – Laura Derrick Jackson passed away peacefully at home on the 3rd of June. Laura was born on the 15th of October, 1928, in the Uniion Springs Community of Sabine Parish. Her parents were Homer and Rutha Derrick. She was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Converse High School and later operated a beauty shop in Shreveport for many years.
A consummate mother and homemaker, Laura was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. Her greatest joy during her final years were visits from her friends and family.
Laura had an unwavering faith in God. She was currently a member of Mission Point Baptist Church in DeSoto Parish. She was formerly a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church. Over the years, she was very involved with the church activities and assisted in many church related endeavors.
When she and Bobby learned that a grandchild was on the way, they immediately bought their final home on Ellerbe Road to be near the baby.
Laura was very thankful that she was able to remain in her home until the end. She was able to stay at home as a result of the devoted and considerate attention of her full-time caregivers for the past eight years, Raymond Webster, Felicia Schenider, Christine Ellard, and Ashley Polk. She also was blessed with excellent caregivers from Peaceful Minds Home Care, Nannette Iverson and Harley Ballard.
Laura was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert W. (Bobby) Jackson, Sr., an infant son, and all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Thigpen and husband Roy, her grandson, Roy (Ret) Thigpen, IV, and her great-granddaughter, Olivia Thigpen. She is also survived by her son, Robert Jackson, Jr. and his wife Sandi, and their children, Jennifer Miller and husband Danny, Michael Aufrichtig and wife Sylwia. She is also survived by her in-laws, Martha Kelly, Jimmy and Bobbie Jean Jackson, Douglas King, and Yvonne Jackson, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 7th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Centuries Funeral Home on Mansfield Road in Shreveport. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home in Shreveport. Services will be officiated by Bro. Ron Johnson, Pastor of Mission Point Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Union Springs Cemetery in Sabine Parish.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Joe Craig Fleniken, Charles Crittendon, Terry Kelly, Mike Keith, Greg Sparks, and Jackie Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Bernice Crittendon, Jimmy Don Anderson, and David Wheeler.
The family is extremely thankful and appreciative for the devotion and loyalty shown to Laura by all of her caregivers. They all treated her as if she was their mother, and she treated them as if they were her children. The family also expresses gratitude to her nieces, Brenda, Tabatha, Jo Ann, Sandra, and Patricia for their visits, calls, and kindness.
