Celebration of Services for Larry Elbert Barber, 72, of Shreveport, LA. will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011, in Centuries Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jerry West of Agape’ Northwest Hospice of Minden, La officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Centuries Memorial Park, Shreveport, Louisiana. The family will be receiving guests for visitation Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from the hours of 5-8 pm.
Larry was born March 17, 1939, to the late Elbert and Lillie Endsley Barber in Houston, Texas and was called to his Heavenly home to sit beside his Lord and Savior December 26, 2011, at his residence in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a retired Crane Operator for GFRC Shelters. Larry graduated from Fair Park High in 1957 where he participated in R.O.T.C. . After graduation, he attended Louisiana Tech for 1.5 years where he majored in Pre-Med. . Larry joined the Army in 1959 and served his country for 4 years as an E-4 Specialist.
He loved his family and his Lord, as his family loved him and enjoyed every moment they had with him. When he wasn’t in his workshop woodworking and building or playing golf, he was by his loving wife’s side in a movie theater eating popcorn. Larry loved to spend as much time with his grandchildren, teaching them to swim and drive and playing chess and riding bicycles. On game day Larry was donned in his teams colors cheering for his favorites , LSU Tigers and New Orleans Saints.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and special cousin Betty Bose whom he thought of as the sister he never had.
Left to cherish Larry's memory and tell his stories will be his beloved wife; Mae Reynolds Barber, four daughters; Laurel Maddox and husband Tommy, of Livingston, S. Carolina, Renee' Price and husband Kenneth, of Henderson, TX, Dianne Nation and husband Britt, of Sibley,La. and Kim Ash and husband Joe, of Shreveport, La. He is also survived by two brothers; Paul Barber and wife Ellen, of Shreveport, La. and Jerry Barber and wife Marilyn, of Lafayette, La., six grandchildren; Kristopher Mercer, Robbie Williams, Trent Daugherty, Kent Price, Ashlea Meredith, and Sara Caldwell, one great-granddaughter; MaKinna Meredith, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Honoring Larry as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Kristopher Mercer, Robbie Williams, Trent Daugherty, Kent Price, and nephews, Christopher Barber, Matthew Barber and Jonathan Barber.
Honorary pallbearers will be the sons-in-law along with nephew, Sherman Barber.
Taps will be played by special friend of the family, Chelsea Culp.
Memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Larry Barber to American Cancer Society and to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital.
