Jane was a wonderful military wife and she supported her husband's career. Traveling all over the U.S.A. and living in Germany for several years became routine. After his death, while serving in the military, she pursued her education and became the first Oncology nurse at what is now Ochsner LSU Trauma Hospital in Shreveport, serving there for over twenty years. She also served as a hospice nurse with Schumpert Medical Health System. Everyone in her care would later tell the family how caring Jane was and that she would call and check on them after their treatments.
Her interests were many and varied. She enjoyed playing tennis and winning trophies locally, making hundreds of children's blankets with her niece, Debbie to give to Providence House and LSU Children's Hospital, almost a life master at Bridge, playing Dominoes with her sisters, Maurine, Mary and Ann every Wednesday afternoon, and playing Scrabble with her daughter, when she drove in from out of state, loved music and loved to sing. Most of all, she loved attending "all" family gatherings.
She displayed great strength in her belief in God and was a Stephen Minister. Jane went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 2, 2024 at The Villages at the Glen, where she lived since last year. She lived a long beautiful life, passing at the age of 98.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Joseph William Thompson, Sr., her son, Joseph William Thompson, Jr., her parents, and siblings Juanita Fulton, Jeanne Dudley (her twin sister), Mary Martin and Bill Holtsclaw.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Patricia Jean Thompson Hickman Frye; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Thompson Hughes; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jim and Kim Hickman, Angie and Kendrew Peacey, Robyn and Kenny Whitehead, Bart and Holly Thompson and Ron and Norma Thompson; eight great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and two sisters, Maurine Locke and Ann Bickham and her husband, Dr. Bill Bickham; along with a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A Celebration of Life at Graveside for Jane will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 2:30 PM at Centuries Memorial Park, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108. Following will be a reception from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in Section A.
