Our mother, Emily Boyd Cherry Herring, age 93, passed away January 25, 2017 after a short illness. Emily was born in Knoxville, TN but lived and raised her family in Shreveport, LA. In 1968 she and her husband W.T. Cherry bought and ran the D&S Trading Post in DeBerry, TX, returning to reside on Cross Lake in Shreveport after the sudden death of W.T.
Emily lived a rich life centered on her family and was a faithful servant of God. Through the years she was an active member of Queensborough, Ford Park, and Emanuel Baptist churches in Shreveport. She sought out opportunities to share her love of music through singing and playing the piano. After moving to Spring, Texas in 2009 to live with her daughter, she attended the First Baptist Church of The Woodlands.
During WWII Emily worked at Western Union. After W.T.’s death she went to work as a secretary for the Shreveport Veteran’s Memorial hospital, retiring in 1988. For a number of years she was the weekend hostess at Abe’s Seafood and then Piccadilly Italian restaurants.
She is preceded in death by: her mother, Ruth Ella Boyd; father, Frederic Hart Boyd; her first husband and father of her five children, William Tanner Cherry; her second husband Floyd Herring; and her 6 siblings – F.H. Boyd, Kenneth Boyd, Lora Jean Phipps, Cleo Dossey, Mary Ruth Bell, and Lois Ledlow. She is survived by her children Richard Cherry (Ordie), Rebecca Krepper (Jim), William Cherry (Kathleen), Kevin Cherry (Diane) and Susan Cherry; grandchildren Kaedy Cherry, Adaline Cherry, Laura Cherry Kingston, Bob Cherry, and Shelby Severance; and two great grandchildren Stephen and Jaxen Cherry.
The funeral will be held at Centuries Memorial Cemetery in Shreveport in the chapel beginning at 2:00pm, Saturday January 28, 2017 with visitation between 12:00 and 2:00pm. A reception in honor of Emily’s life will be held after the service.
