In 1988, He retired from the Shreveport Fire Department after 30 years as Chief Master Mechanic. He could build or repair anything. His heart was full of love and he was a man of strong character and wisdom. He was always there to help others without thinking of himself. John loved gardening, wood working, fishing for his wild blue heron "Ole Blue" every evening. He also adored spending time with his grandchildren especially hunting with his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his son, John P. Haire, Jr.; daughter, Pamela Jorgensen; great grandson, Noah Mayo; parents; brother, Don Haire; and sister, Catherine Rogers.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Glenda Haire; sister, Lucille Thomas; daughter, Sheri Mayo and husband, John; grandsons, Johnathan Mayo (Rhonda), Chad Mayo (Melanie), Michael Morris (Leslie); granddaughters, Holli Salazar (Aaron) and Lisa Ellender (Brian); and 20 great grandchildren.
A visitation for Chief Haire will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home & Park, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108. A celebration of life will occur Friday, January 26, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home & Park. He will be laid to rest in Centuries Memorial Park. Officiating the services will be Michael Morris. Honoring him as pallbearers will be Shane Mayo, Chad Mayo, Aaron Salazar, Tanner Mayo, Wayne Mayo and Brian Ellender.
