A service to celebrate Allen’s life well lived will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday January 8, 2021 in the Sanctuary at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 3715 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA 71105, Reverend Dr. Greg Davis officiating. Visitation will also be held at the church from noon until the time of service.
Allen was born December 26, 1936 to Flavis Edgar and Ruby Zachary Doughty and spent his formative years in Kentwood, LA where he graduated from Kentwood High School. He attended Northwestern State University and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as numerous post graduate hours. While at NSU, Allen continued his courtship with Arline and was active with the Wesley Foundation. This affiliation with the Wesley Foundation deepened his Christianity and fostered the formation of numerous lifelong and dear friends for Arline and him. He was later referred to as the glue that held that group together for more than 60 years.
Following college, Allen began as an educator and spent the majority of his nearly 29-year career in Caddo Parish teaching carpentry, woodworking, engine repair and other vocational skillsets to young adults from all walks of life. As is common with career educators, Allen would very often encounter a former student at Lowe’s, Home Depot or Centenary Hardware and be a source of expertise and advice for the project they were undertaking.
Throughout this same time and through thick and thin, he and Arline amassed a number of real estate properties in Shreveport, LA. Allen was fastidious, especially when it came to his meticulous craftsmanship and these unique and artisan qualities were instilled and reflected not only to those, he taught but also in his own investment and personal properties. To say Allen was a Jack of All Trades would be a tremendous understatement.
When not engaged in remodeling a property, restoring one of his three classic 1966 Ford Mustangs, attending a classic car auction in Dallas with his friend Smokey Johnson or repairing a boat, car or home, you could easily find Allen on the water in one of his boats, traveling the world or on Cross Lake’s Bird Island planting trees with Amy, Lillie and Allen or working on a major project with Ronnie Free and Charles Simank. Somehow, he always found time for family, relatives and friends to help with activities ranging from the simplest of tasks to major undertakings. He’d travel across the nation with his tools in his Ford F-150 when someone needed his help and expertise.
While traveling the world with family and friends, Allen also perfected one of his many immense talents, photography and he made it his objective to visit friends and family whenever he could, often planning his trips to include those visits. His passion for photography and fostering friendships was fondly regarded by all who knew him.
Allen, known to many of his friends and relatives as Doughty, is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Arline Hall Doughty, his daughter, Amy Doughty England and husband Eric, two grandchildren Allen Hall and Lillie Ann; and brother Rodney and wife Sally. He will be missed by so many.
The family would like to thank Dr. Alan Brown and Dr. Richard Haynie for their attentive, passionate and reassuring care.
Allen’s family requests memorial contributions be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, Shreveport, LA.
