Funeral Mass is under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner, Texas, and will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 10:00 am at Saint Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner, Texas with Father Bryan Heyer officiating. Interment will follow at Shiner Catholic Cemetery in Shiner, Texas. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 7:00 pm at Buffington Funeral Home. Visitation will be 12:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Buffington Funeral Home.
Ernest was born on September 2, 1939 in Shiner, Texas. He was the son of Ferdinand and Annie (Kalisek) Berger. After graduating from high school, Ernest joined the US Army and obtained the rank of Sargent before is Honorable Discharge in 1969. He married Mary Ann Etzler on January 27, 1968 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville, Texas. He was a Lifetime Farmer/Rancher. Ernest was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He liked to go hunting and fishing when his farming would allow the time away. He enjoyed doing carpentry work. Ernest raised pigs, chickens, and peacocks, and processed his own pork sausage at home. He liked to feed his fish. He enjoyed watching the Game Show Network and old westerns on TV. He loved his family, and playing with his many grandchildren. Ernest liked telling stories of his life, and the past. He always went to Bee’s to buy his lottery tickets. Ernest was a generous person who was always willing to help others.
Ernest is survived by his wife; Mary Ann Berger, four sons; Ernest Berger, Jr. and his wife, Stacy of Shiner, Texas, James Berger and his wife, Michele of Victoria, Texas, Father David Berger of Shiner, Texas, Thomas Berger and his wife, Sara of Shiner, Texas, six daughters; Nancy Ellis and her husband, Bryan of Victoria, Texas, Jane Crosslin and her husband, Todd of Sasche, Texas, Patricia Svetlik and her husband, Greg of Dripping Springs, Texas, Jeannette Shimek and her husband, Chris of Hallettsville, Texas, Anna Mukalel and her husband, Doyle of Rosenburg, Texas, Laura Srubar and her husband, Slate of El Campo, Texas, twenty-four grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; Ferdinand and Annie Berger, one son; Joseph Anthony Berger, five brothers; Eugene Berger, Dennis Berger, Benedict Berger, Alvin Berger, and Ferdinand Berger, Jr.
Pallbearers for Mr. Berger will be; Kevin Crosslin, Kyle Crosslin, Joshua Svetlik, Dylan Srubar, Ethan Berger, and Sean Berger. Honorary Pallbearers will be; Konner Crosslin, Kolin Crosslin, Wade Shimek, Logan Berger, Matthew Svetlik, Cole Srubar, Kade Srubar, and Aiden Mukalel.
