Helen Mae Stranberg, 93, a resident of Meadow View Manor Nursing home, died there, Saturday morning, January 21, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She “held on” until she had a chance to see all of her family.
Helen was born May 23, 1918 in Winona, Minnesota to Theodore and Meta (Harders) Eifealdt. She graduated from Marshfield High School, Class of 1936. She continued her education at Winona State College, where she earned her BA Degree in Education in 1940.
Following graduation, Helen began her teaching career in Pine Island, Minnesota, and later taught music in Sheboygan area schools. Helen’s love of music was evidenced by her long time tenure as senior choir director at Ebenezer United Church of Christ and her induction into the Sheboygan Music Wall of Fame.
On December 27, 1946 Helen and John Stranberg were united in marriage in Winona. The couple resided on S. 15th St. in Sheboygan for many years. They enjoyed traveling over the years, and wintered in Silver Springs Shores, Florida from 1981 until returning to Sheboygan fulltime in 1998.
John, a long time employee of Wisconsin Telephone Co., preceded her in death on April 22, 2004.
Helen was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, where she belonged to the Mildred Circle. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Sheboygan Memorial Post 9156, American Legion Post 83 Ladies Auxiliaries, and was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Helen enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, writing letters to friends, and playing her piano daily. Helen’s presence at all family events made each one more special. Her children and grandchildren were the highlight of her life. Helen was very conscientious about keeping in touch with old friends and maintaining current friendships. Many happy family times were shared, most every Sunday, at Klemme’s Wagon Wheel. She also enjoyed luncheons each month with the Ding-A-Lings (wives of retired telephone co.workers).
Survivors include three sons: John (Wynne) Stranberg, Tom Stranberg all of Sheboygan, and Paul (Cheryl) of Austintown, Ohio; four grandchildren: Tracy (Randy) Johannsen, Matt (Angie) Stranberg and their children, Jerald and Weston; Catherine Stranberg, Erik (Emily) Stranberg and their daughter, Elizabeth; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Frederick Eifealdt.
Funeral services will be held Monday, 1:30 P.M. at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Rev. Mark E. Jaberg, Pastor of St. Paul’s United church of Christ, will officiate. Entombment will take place in Garden Terrace Mausoleum. A time of visitation and support will be held at Ballhorn Chapels on Monday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
The Stranberg family extends a heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers at Meadow View Manor and Hospice Advantage for their kindness and loving care.
Helen was a true optimist. She always looked on the bright side and was an inspiration to many. She will always be remembered for her loving, caring nature and generosity.
