Barbara Allman Schott

Barbara Schott, 93, died at her home in Sheboygan on Saturday, January 18, 2014. She was born on December 31, 1920, in Sheboygan, one of five daughters of Harold and Jean (Trine) Allman. She was a life-long resident of Sheboygan.

She studied nursing at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and received her R.N. in March, 1942. Later that week, on March 28, 1942, Barbara married Dr. Edward G. Schott in Sheboygan. Their steadfast love for 57 years was a model for their children and grandchildren. Dr. Schott preceded her in death on January 5, 1999.

Barbara was actively involved at First Congregational Church U.C.C. as a member of the Deborah and Rebecca Circles and as president of the Women’s Fellowship. She often took the lead in the church kitchen. She also was active in the Medical Auxiliary, the Sheboygan Service Club, Pine Hills women’s golf, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross Blood Bank, bridge club, book club, and as a school nurse in the Sheboygan public schools. Barbara and Ed’s home was a welcoming place to their children’s friends and to many visitors who came through their front door. The table at 404 Lincoln Avenue was always expandable to accommodate others.

Barbara is remembered by many neighbors, and by many newcomers to the Sheboygan Clinic staff, as the first one to greet them upon their arrival in Sheboygan - a warm hospitality which often led to lifelong friendships. Every visitor to Barbara’s home learned that her cookie jar was always full. For many years she kept it filled herself, and in later years, family members and caretakers mastered the chocolate chip cookie recipe and made sure that the cookie jar tradition continued. Despite physical limitations in recent years, she maintained her interest in the lives and activities of family and friends with uncomplaining good spirits. With her warmth and humor, she made each person feel important.

Barbara and Ed enjoyed international travel, with many special visits to their friends Tom and Janie Thomas in Grand Cayman and a number of Rotary International trips. Other travels included a visit to Israel for the wedding of their AFS daughter, Janine Strauss, and to Greece to visit their AFS son, George Pierris.

Barbara is survived by her six children: Edward Jr. (Madalyn), Spring, Texas; Elizabeth (Michael) Spangler, Sheboygan; Katharine (David) Quasius, Sheboygan; John (Martha) Schott, Elkhart Lake; Jean Schott (William) Wagner, Sheboygan; and Margaret (Joseph) Hand, Sheboygan Falls.

Barbara is survived as well by twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren: Jill (Matthew) Moorhead and their son Henry; Timothy (Sandy) Gerend and their children Katie, Sadie, Andrew, and Jake; Peter (Alexa) Gerend and their children Asa, Jack, Greta, and Sam; Thomas (Amy) Gerend and their children Mary, Lillian, and Gretchen; step-granddaughter Debra (Dan Dennis) Spangler and their daughters Eliza and Anika; step-granddaughter Alissa (EJ) Alexandra and their daughter Lucy; Matthew (Michelle) Quasius and their children Betty, Dottie, and Frankie; Ben Quasius; Scott Quasius and his children Dee and Otto; Katie (Chip) Bongers and their daughter Carley; Sarah Schott and Brian King and their sons Ethan and Noah; Rachel (Donny) Belle; Elizabeth (TJ) Roy and their daughters Anelise and Hannah; John (Marilyn) Wagner; Paul (Linnae) Wagner and their daughter Lucy; Michael Wagner; Joseph Wagner; Edward Wagner; Andrew (Jessica) Harper and their children Addi, AJ, and Tori; Eric (Shanley) Harper and their sons Sam and Calvin; Meredith Harper and her fiancé Nick Bertalon.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; and by her four sisters, Jean, Harriet, Elizabeth, and Mary Eva.

A special thankyou to the many loyal and loving caregivers who have helped Barbara and her family in recent years, and especially her most current helpers, Saran Batchuluun, John Hethorn and Kristy Enkhbaatar.

The family will greet friends on Saturday, January 25, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the First Congregational Church, 310 Bluff Ave., Sheboygan. A worship service celebrating Barbara’s life will follow at 4 p.m.
