Wayman "Jack" Sturgill

Jack Sturgill was born on May 1st, 1939, in the hills of Kentucky, in a small town named Delphia, to Riley and Nora (Baker) Sturgill. He was the last surviving sibling from his family. He was one of seven boys, two sisters, and two half-sisters. He is survived by his wife Velma and his three children Christy Thompson, Eric Sturgill, and Brian Sturgill. He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren and eight loving great grandchildren.

His life was full of adventure, and he was a world traveler. As a young man, he left for California where he had older siblings and worked in the shipyard. His brother Bernie persuaded him to leave California for Nebraska where he started working in the oil field and where he met and married his wife, Velma. He lived and worked in Nebraska and Wyoming where he started his family. The oil field work took him all over the world. He worked in Alaska, Libya, Venezuela, Kuwait, Gabon, and Jakarta. These later stints had him working on deep sea, offshore rigs.

Once he retired, he devoted his time to raising a garden, doting on his grandchildren, and telling stories about his life and travels. He was a great storyteller who always had a story to tell. He particularly enjoyed taking grandchildren to their sporting events, scouting activities, and showing up for school achievement awards. On the first day of school, he always came by for pictures with the grandchildren. He was always “on call”, taking grandchildren to their events and meeting them when they got home off the bus.

In his later years, his grandchildren doted on him. He was a legend in his own right, much beloved and cherished.

He passed from this life on March 2, 2025, surrounded by his family. He will be deeply missed.

A visitation for Wayman will be held Sunday, March 9, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, 44909 Highway 3, Shawnee, OK 74801. A graveside service will occur Monday, March 10, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Resthaven Memorial Park, 16006 S Rock Creek Rd, Shawnee, OK 74801.
