Boots was born December 31,1943 in Brunswick County, son of the late Mahlon Leonard and Laura Andrews Ward. He was a veteran of the United States Army. After retiring from CP&L he created a successful HVAC business. His business was his service to helping people. It was never about the money but being able to help, therefore oftentimes he would not charge his customers. He enjoyed spending his time at home mowing the grass and being with family and his dog Scruffy. He played a very active role in helping raise his grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as "PaPa"
