Reverend Smith was born in Patrick County, Virginia on July 15, 1931, son of the late Roy and Velma Nickelston Smith. He heeded the call of God to enter the ministry in his early twenties and began attending Gardner-Webb College followed by Fruitland Baptist Bible College. Reverend Smith pastored Baptist churches from the mountains to the coast of North Carolina. His hobbies included deer hunting, fishing and collecting old bottles. Some of his favorite foods were country ham, ramps (a wild onion that grow in the North Carolina mountains) and snow cream. Lee Roy dearly loved his cats and was also a talented woodworker. Preceding him in death was his wife Faye Smith, son Gary Smith, and brother, Billy Smith.
Survivors include his two daughters, Tonya Cecil of Supply and Tamara Turner and husband Lee of Morganton, North Carolina; grandchildren, Sonya Taylor, Justin Turner, Jessica Farkas and husband Scott, and Jason Smith; two great grandchildren, Theo and Molly Farkas; brother, Larry Smith of Kernersville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025 at two o’clock in the afternoon at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with Reverend Jeff Gibby and Reverend Chris Wroten officiating. Burial will follow in the Galloway West Cemetery in Supply.
Pallbearers will be Don Bromley, Doug Bromley, Reverend Michael Hewett, Reverend David Little, Doug Hanback, and Henry Bennett.
Honorary pallbearers will be pastors of the Brunswick Baptist Association, Terry Lisk and Lyn Holden.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick - Lower Cape Fear Life Care, 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, NC 28422.
