John Francis Konen, 84, of Supply, NC, passed away, Wednesday, February 22, 2017.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, February 28 at Saint Brendan’s Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Hwy W, Shallotte, NC. A reception will follow at St. Brendan's Catholic Church.
John was born on January 6, 1933 on Long Island, NY. He joined the Navy at age 17 as a machinist repairman. He later worked at Gulton Industries in NJ where his talent as a draftsman was recognized. He spent most of his career as a tool designer and plant engineer at Purolator Products in Rahway, NJ before accepting the challenge as project coordinator for the building of a new plant in Fayetteville, NC, where he eventually transferred in 1972. John later worked at United Tool and Stamping in Fayetteville and Woodard Furniture in Maxton before retiring to his home on the intra-coastal waterway in Supply, NC in 2001.
John had a real gift of artistic ability and loved to draw cartoons and especially Disney characters; he enjoyed bowling, archery, hunting, fishing, crabbing, clamming, boating, and camping. He camped from Niagara Falls, Canada all the way down the East Coast to South Florida. He served as Assistant Scout Master, was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and past Commander of Shallotte River Power Squadron (2005). He loved the water and building things. John built all three homes in which his family lived – Edison, NJ, Hope Mills, NC and “Windy Point.”
John is survived by his wife, Joan Margaret (Yuhas) of Supply, NC, son Joe Konen and wife Jillene of Clayton, NC, and daughter Jill and husband John Beavin of Clayton, NC and three grandchildren, Jakob Beavin, Joseph Konen, and Jenna Beavin all of Clayton, NC. He is predeceased by his first son, John F. Konen, Jr. “Jack” formerly of Boone, NC. He is also preceded in death by his brother Russell “Edward” Konen, mother Mary Hart Konen and stepfather John J. Konen.
