Jean was born to parents Carl Hathcock and Polly Morgan of Norwood, NC, on April 1, 1948. The family later grew upon the birth of Jean’s younger sister Carlene Hathcock six years later. Jean grew up with a large extended family who she loved dearly.
In July of 1979, Jean married Douglas Gillette of Laurinburg, NC. Jean and Doug both loved animals and together they cared for and raised a wide range of God’s creatures, including three children of their own. After the family moved to Shallotte, NC, Jean became very fond of living so close to the ocean and after storms of every kind she could often be found walking along the seashore, seeking out unique seashell treasures brought in by the waves.
Jean was a resident of Shallotte, NC, for over 40 years and was very involved in her community. She was a frequent volunteer with the schools her children attended as well as St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church of Shallotte, where she was a proud member of their chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King.
Jean is survived by her children Morgan (Benjamin) Donnelly, George Gillette, and Marine (Jon) Gillette; her sister Carlene (Tony) Herrin; and her beloved dachshund Lucy.
A service will be held for Jean on March 31, 2023, at 1:00 PM at St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church of Shallotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, Jean has requested that donations be made to the church’s chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King. Interested parties may contact the church at (910) 754-9313 for further information.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.shallottefunerals.com for the Gillette family.
