Affectionately known as “Miss Bea” she was born Beatrice Venable on September 18,1930, in Halifax, Virginia. One of ten children, Bea lived and worked on the family farm until her marriage to Wallace Garner in June 1949.Two years later, Bea and Wallace moved to Washington, DC with their first child to seek a better life. In Washington, the Garners had four more children and worked hard to provide for their family. Bea returned to night school to continue her education and was awarded her high school General Education Diploma in 1967. She was subsequently employed by the Federal Government as a food service worker and worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital until her retirement. After retiring, Bea worked many years as a volunteer at a local hospital and with Foster Grandparents. She was also active in her local church and enjoyed working in her yard, doing jigsaw puzzles and watching cooking shows on television. Unfortunately, Wallace passed away in 1983; Bea lived alone for several years before moving to Richmond in 2008 to live with her son and his family. Bea moved to Coastal Pointe two years ago, and always had a smile for everyone. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visited as often as they could to see their beloved “Nana.” In addition to her parents and husband, Bea was preceded in death by her son, Brian Garner, brother, Joe Louis Venable, and three sisters, Regina Venable, Hazel Bowie, and Myrtle Garner.
Survivors include her children, Wallace Garner of Bowie, Maryland, Diane Jeter and husband Herb of Supply, North Carolina, Gary Garner and wife Gloria of Richmond, Virginia, and Glenn Garner and wife Patricia of York, South Carolina; one brother, Lawrence Venable and wife Virginia of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Aleane Ferrell of Washington, DC; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 16th from 10am to 11am followed by the Celebration of Life at 11am at Ft. Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722. There will be a repast onsite after the interment.
