Mary Lou Nevin’s prayers were answered when she left this world on March 27, 2024, to celebrate God’s love with those long-endeared souls who preceded her. She was born to a faithful Catholic family in Buffalo, New York, on July 29,1938. After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy, she joined the Sisters of Stella Niagara. Being called to pursue God’s work through a secular life, she chose to depart the convent nearly three years later.
She put herself through nursing school and graduated in 1961. On a trip to the Catskill Mountains with friends, she met the love of her life, Frederick Nevin. His blue eyes were charming, but it was his Christian faith that won her heart. They married in 1964 and had three children, Lisa, Brian, and Christopher. Fred’s job offer and Mary Lou’s sense of adventure moved the family to Littleton, Colorado in 1978.
While raising her children, Mary Lou continued her work as a nurse. She loved her children dearly, always guiding them into the church community. As her children became independent, she sought a deeper relationship with God, so she returned to Catholic studies and became a Secular Discalced Carmelite. Her life wasn’t easy but her contemplative faith in God gave her strength through the journey of several health issues, the death of her husband, and the tragic loss of two children.
Mary Lou spent her last years in Largo, Florida, where she shared the fruits of the 4-year biblical study that she completed through The Catholic Biblical School of the Archdiocese of Denver. She leaves a treasured community in the bible study groups that she organized and taught. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren, always holding them in prayer. Mary Lou’s love and laughter is remembered by many.
Mary Lou is survived by her son Brian, sister Lucille, brother Louis and grandchildren Sophia, Natalie and Miles.
A funeral mass will be held for Mary Lou at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Largo, Florida on April 12, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a place dear to Mary Lou – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
