Born in Jersey City, NJ to Ann and Michael F. Whalen; he would go on to serve his country proudly in the US Navy during WWII. He was born February 25, 1927 in Jersey City, NJ. After graduating Dickinson High School, he went to work for Continental Insurance Company as an appraiser. He met his wife, Elizabeth Whalen, one summer at the jersey shore in Belmar, and married her in 1962. She was the love of his life. They have lived in their hometown of Secaucus, NJ for over 50 years.
He was a Secaucus Little League and recreation basketball coach for many years and loved teaching the youth of Secaucus the role that sports can play in shaping their lives. He also ran for councilman of Secaucus. He was an avid Notre Dame Figthting Irish sports fan along with the Yankees and football Giants.
Michael was predeceased by his siblings Joseph Whalen and his wife Kathleen, Elayne Sexton and her husband William, Marilu Degnan and her husband James, Kathleen Feeney and her husband Jack, and his broth-in-law James Holahan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Elizabeth Whalen, his loving son Michael F. Whalen, Jr. and his wife Kimberly, cherished grandchildren Victoria and Michael F. Whalen III; and his dear sibling Madaline Holahan; He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews. He will be eternally missed.
A visitation was held on Wednesday, December 16 at Mack Memorial Home, Secaucus, NJ, for immediate family only. A Funeral Mass followed at Immaculate Conception Church, and Interment was at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton, NJ. There will be a celebration of his life later this summer.
