Dominic Rizzo, 96, of Secaucus, NJ, formerly of Union City and North Bergen entered into rest on Wednesday August 27, 2014. Beloved husband of the late Esther Rizzo. Devoted father and father-in-law of Peter and Edna Rizzo. Loving grandfather of Dominic and Janina Rizzo. Dear brother of Giuseppina and the late Maria, Alfonso, Giuseppe and Biago.
Dominic came to the United States from Favara, Sicily in 1938. His first years here were spent studying and teaching with the Salesians, first in Tampa, Florida and then in Newton, New Jersey. In 1947 he became a language teacher at Union Hill High School in Union City. He taught Latin, French, Spanish, and Italian. In 1964 he became chairman of the Language Department, a position he held until he retired in 1992.
Dominic had many hobbies. He played the piano. He read the great poets and philosophers. He continued to read the classics in Latin. He followed all of the local sports teams. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing vegetables.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4PM to 8PM at Mack Memorial Home, 1245 Paterson Plank Road, and Secaucus. The family will gather at the funeral home with their relatives and friends on Saturday at 8:30 AM for a 9:30 PM funeral mass at Immaculate Conception Church. Entombment to follow at Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dominic and his late wife Esther may be made to the S.L.E. Lupus foundation.
