Hank was born in Seattle, WA on May 15, 1925; the youngest of two sons, to the late Frederick and Mary Houghton. He was preceded in death by his brother Fred. He attended high school in Seattle at Queen Anne High and upon graduating enlisted in the Army and was sent to Guam where his military occupational specialty was weather observer. After he was discharged, he went to work at Bill’s Towing and went on to become a trailer salesman for Fruehauf Trailer. He then went to work for Allied Body Works, Inc. where he became part-owner. He retired from Allied Body and started snowbirding every winter to Palm Desert and Phoenix, AZ with his wife Mary.
On a cool April night in 1946, while dancing to the music of the Dick Jergins Orchestra, he met the love of his life, Mary Suryan. The spark ignited a love that burned for over 60 years until Mary’s death on January 17, 2008. Hank and Mary were blessed with a family of two sons, Billy and Randy (Janis) Houghton, and one daughter Kim (Rick) Wahlbrink, eight grandchildren, Chad, Rachelle, Ian, and Alyson Houghton, Cady, Troy and Ryan (Katrina) and Elizabeth Wahlbrink and six great grandchildren, Michael, Chad, Jr., James and Shakira Houghton, and Shae and Trenton Wahlbrink. Number seven great grandchild, Ayla is due in mid-March.
Hank enjoyed golfing and golfed at more than 100 golf courses around the country with Torrey Pines being his favorite. He also enjoyed gambling at area casinos and in Reno, NV every chance he got. He also loved traveling to Hawaii.
Hank loved entertaining his friends and family whether it be going out to dinner or just at his home. He was also a wonderful swing dancer. During his last few years he met the lovely Emy Bogus. They had great times together up at the Tulalip Casino and breakfast on Sunday mornings at the Eagles. She will always be part of our family.
When Hank got sick and needed 24 hour care, Nelson Kwambai entered our lives. He was very special to Hank and will also always be part of our family.
Rest in peace Dad – You will be loved and missed by all who knew you.
