Through her heart, she devoted all her energy to supporting her husband, Fung Chang (John) Sung, and raising and supporting their daughters Ifen, Iwaine, Irene, and son Iyue. Then followed daughter-in-law Keesa, son-in-law Steve, and grandchildren Francesca, Luke, AnnaClare, Eleni (Ellie), and Devon, all of whom she attended to with joy. She was fierce and resourceful, emphasizing and modeling the importance of family, education, music, generosity, and food. Oh, the food.
Through her hands, she made a home; she fed her family and many friends legendary meals, green-thumbed bountiful gardens, and assembled a menagerie of houseplants. Also with her hands, she built a clothing alteration shop (as a self-taught seamstress) that helped provide for her family.
As a child and young woman, she was deeply enthralled with music, especially Chopin. This love of music carried on in her teaching of junior high music and math, despite her accounting degree, and all four children played instruments (piano, cello, and/or violin) and joined youth symphonies.
Tracy was born on January 13, 1943, in Zhudong, Taiwan, growing up in a lively, but orderly home with seven siblings. In 1967, she married John, after which they had their first two children, Ifen and Iyue. In 1977, they moved to Seattle to enable John to pursue his PhD in Epidemiology at Univ. of Washington. In 1980, they had twin girls, Iwaine and Irene. In 1985, they moved to Atlanta, which is where she started her alteration shop and later managed a furniture warehouse.
As her children and business grew, Tracy developed dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease, which led to her having to close her business ten years after starting it. And with John then teaching in Taiwan, she stayed in Atlanta a few more years until Iwaine and Irene finished high school, after which she retired and returned to Seattle for closer travel to Taiwan. Once retired, she was able to enjoy traveling all over the world, including Paris, Moscow, Johannesburg, and Bangkok, with John for his work
Back in Seattle, Tracy re-acquainted herself with old friends, and received many enthusiastic visits from her grandchildren visiting from San Francisco and Boston, and joined a thriving Buddhist community.
Tracy passed away peacefully from complications of pulmonary fibrosis (an outcome of dermatomyositis) and pneumonia the morning of Friday, December 8th. All four children were able to say goodbye and have the peace of mind that she passed in her sleep without struggle. In addition to her husband, John, children Ifen (Carlson), Iyue, Irene, Iwaine, and grandchildren: Luke, Devon (Carlson), and Francesca, AnnaClare, Ellie (Sung), she is survived by her sisters: Tsui-Yuan, Tsui-Ling Conchita, Tsui-Jen, and brothers: Hung-Wen, Hung-Zheng, Hung-Jen (Tseng).
Her service will be held at 10a.m., Tuesday, December 19th, at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home.
