Steve passed away at home on November 20, 2014 in the arms of his loving wife following a brave and tenacious 4 year battle with brain cancer. He was an amazing fighter, and managed to beat the odds for 3 years longer than predicted when he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme on August 9, 2010.
Steve was born on June 27, 1960 in Lebanon, PA, and grew up in Myerstown, PA. Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine. He is survived by his wife Linda Morud, his father Harold, his sister Sue Pulaski (husband Phil), his brother Michael (wife Cathy), nieces Sarah Pulaski, Emily Wolfe and Hannah Wolfe, nephews David Pulaski and Evan Morud, and extended family in Pennsylvania, Washington and Nevada.
Steve earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geology at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, and his Master’s from Michigan Tech University in Houghton, MI (“da U.P.”). He was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. After graduation, he headed west, and just kept on going. He lived and worked in San Francisco and Honolulu before settling in Seattle with Linda. He was a licensed Professional Geologist in Washington and Oregon.
Steve worked as an environmental consultant for over 20 years, with Dames & Moore, Woodward Clyde and URS. Fun-loving and easy-going, he had a great circle of friends that lasted a lifetime. His job took him to all of the Hawaiian Islands, Japan and Guam, and throughout Washington, Oregon, the southeast United States, and Alaska, including such remote destinations as Deadhorse, Adak, and even Attu Island.
Steve loved to travel and made it to 5 of the 7 continents with his wife, Linda. Over the years, they visited Greece and Turkey, Australia and New Zealand, Guatemala and Belize, Mexico, Peru and Chile, Italy, Hong Kong and Thailand, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. In between his world travels, he enjoyed exploring closer to home, including many camp trips in the Pacific NW, Montana, California and the southwest, as well as journeys to nearly all of the United States. He didn’t let his prognosis stop his love of traveling, and took his final trip to Utah to see Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Arches and Capitol Reef national parks in September 2014, only 2 months ago.
Steve loved the great outdoors and stayed fit by hiking, biking, running and playing soccer in the over-30 and over-40 Seattle rec leagues. He also raised 3 fantastic dogs (Britt, Jack and Roxy), and was an amazing dog-dad. He also enjoyed live theater, outdoor concerts, the blues, Willie K and the Paperboys, a band he saw over 30 times including once outside Munich, Germany.
An accomplished home brewer, Steve loved to share his beer with family and friends at parties and as gifts; which is why the best way to celebrate his life is with a craft brew toast and a laugh. Next summer, his ashes will be scattered where he was most comfortable, in the great outdoors, in view of a volcano, and with the stars overhead.
Memorials to Golden Bond Rescue of Oregon, or Providence Hospice of Seattle would appropriately honor Steve’s love of golden retrievers and his valiant fight against cancer.
Please wear your favorite Hawaiian Shirt to the Celebration of Life to wish Steve a fond "Aloha"
