July 30, 1917 - November 20, 2010
Beloved mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and friend to so many...
Ruby left us to join her beloved husband of 61 years, Grady (Mike) Hughes, on Saturday, November 20, 2010. As always, she was happily surrounded by her loving family, her greatest joy.
Her 18 year old grandson, whom she adored, had moved in with her fulltime four years ago, when her husband died, to cook for her, coordinate and administer her medications, clean for her (intermittently) and entertain her, both by playing his electric guitar at full volume (after she removed her hearing aids) and by playing nightly games of cutthroat blackjack with her.
Her granddaughter shared board games, riddles, a love of art projects and making ceramic creations at Paint the Town with her beloved grandmother.
Her daughter-in-law was devoted to her every need, from fashion consultation and purchase for Ruby's meeting with the Crown Princess of Sweden to taking her to the coffee shop, the theater and the doctor's office, as well as reminiscing and enjoying the antiques and memorabilia her mother-in-law shared with her.
Her sons are so very grateful to have had the best Mom ever.
Ruby was the recipient of the Faculty Medal for academic excellence at the University of Washington in 1944 and graduated from the UW Phi Beta Kappa in 1945. She worked for the Dean's office at the UW and the Roosevelt High School library. She married Grady (Mike) Hughes, World War II veteran and bank officer, in 1945. She has been a choir director, an award-winning speed typist, a poll supervisor, a club chairman and a charity volunteer.
She is survived by her sons, Grady and Kevin, her daughter-in-law Heather and her grandchildren Michael and Gwen. She will be very deeply and profoundly missed.
We love you, Grandma.
We love you, Mom.
Private memorial services will be held.
