
Oscar was born November 4, 1919 in Montesano, Washington to Julius and Julia Carlstad, immigrants from Norway and Sweden, respectively. The family moved to Queen Anne Hill above Seattle Pacific College when Oscar was four years old. He spoke only Norwegian and Swedish when he began grade school.
Oscar was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps before volunteering for the Army in June 1942, spending over four years in military service. He was with the 65th Infantry in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Oscar died June 20 at home after a long battle with Leukemia. He died with the same dignity, grace and politeness that endeared him to all who had the good fortune to know and love him. He will be missed more than words can ever say, and will be forever remembered by those he left behind.
Called Carl by his wife and most of his friends. He worked for many years in the printing trade at Craftsmen?s Press, The Seattle P.I. and the Daily Olympian.
After retiring, he and Ruby spent many happy years traveling and enjoyed themselves in their motor home and winters in Arizona.
His wife of 56 years, his children Richard and wife Margarite, Brian and grandsons William, Colin and Benjamin, Bret and wife Cynthia and granddaughter Julia survive him. An infant daughter proceeded him in death as did his sister and brother.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Abbey View Cemetery, Brier, Washington. Reception following at family home. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Children?s Hospital.
