Mary Ann (Nelson) Bartell passed away February 15, 2023, in Seattle, Washington. She was proceeded in death by her husband Robert, brother Donald, and parents Ellis and Effie Nelson. Mary Ann was born February 10, 1935 in Belgrade, Minnesota. Her early childhood was spent in Orr, Minnesota and when she was still a young child, her family moved to Seattle where she completed grade school and graduated from high school. Mary Ann graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She has fond memories doing practical work in Ann Arbor, Michigan before moving back to Seattle. She married Robert in 1964 and worked throughout their marriage. Mary Ann started her professional career as a Public Health nurse doing home visits and later worked for Swedish Hospital as a Recovery Room nurse and later supervisor. She took great pride in her nursing abilities and used her skills in a variety of areas including several trips to underserved countries with the organization Interplast. She was a firm believer in service and volunteered for several organizations, most notably as a Docent for Woodland Park Zoo. In addition to volunteering, Mary Ann enjoyed playing bridge and traveling with her family, locally and around the world. She instilled the importance of education, service, the arts, and travel in her daughters Robin (Humberstad) and Jona, as well as in her granddaughter Elizabeth (Robin & Patrick). The four “Bartell Girls” were fortunate to have had numerous adventures together and many memories were made. Mary Ann considered family and friends to be of the greatest value and considered those who were friends to be like family. She will be greatly missed by those who were fortunate to know her. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
