March 8, 1929 to January 25, 2024
Lorraine was born in Minot, North Dakota to Louis Gelking and Helen (Dinnetz) Gelking. She was born a second-generation American with immigrant grandparents from Germany and Norway. She grew up in Minot. She went to Minneapolis to take a course in cosmetology after high school. There she met up with her best friend’s cousin Donald Harris who was also from Minot and attending an electronic school on the GI Bill. They were married December 26, 1947 in his parent’s house by his father who was a Brothern minister. They were married 76 years at the time of her passing.
Their daughter Sharyn was born in Minot and then they moved to Seattle in 1952, where Don’s brother told them of the many job opportunities there. In 1953 their son Rodney was born and they moved into the house in North Seattle that they live in until 2015.
Their younger son Steven was born in 1961.
Lorraine was a wonderful stay at home mom and grandmother with a sense of humor. She loved to shop at Northgate mall for all the month-end clearances. I remember her filling my living room with Easter baskets for my preschool children, because they were 90% off in the after Easter sale. She loved fashion, gardening, her dogs and the little birds that ate at her feeders in the spring. She will be missed
Lorraine is survived by her husband Don, children Sharyn Mellors (Andrew), Rod Harris (Linda), Steve, her grandchildren Andrew Weller, Barbara Schaller (Kirk), Jason Harris (Heather), Monica Jaxon, Zachery Harris, Kendall Harris and great- grandchildren Aiden Weller, Emmet Weller, Morgan Weller, Maile Schaller, Evan Schaller, Samantha Harris and Alex Harris.
There will be a memorial celebration at Northhaven Retirement Apartments, located at 11045 8th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98125, on Saturday March 16, 2024 at 10:00 am.
