Laurie was born on May 4th, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Hazel (Mundt) and Victor Nohl. She graduated high school from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and completed her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Minnesota in 1982. Later in life, she obtained her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in 2017 and practiced as a counselor through her own private practice, Soul Sunrise Counseling.
Laurie dedicated her life to the care of others. She was particularly passionate about her children, dedicating her early motherhood years to homeschooling all four until high school. Her love of her family extended beyond her children to her nine grandchildren. Whether in the gifts she gave, the time she spent, or the comfort she provided, all who interacted with Laurie experienced genuine connection with her. An example of her giving nature was evident to the end. One of the beautiful things she enjoyed were glassybaby candle votives, and she was giving these as gifts until three days before she passed.
Laurie’s love of the beautiful extended to floral gardening, visiting Hawai’i, writing, joining her daughter in a tap-dancing class, as well as line dancing, ballet, and other dance forms. She loved music and would attend concerts with friends or family, including Elton John, Ringo Starr, the Fab Four, and Paul McCartney. Another way she lived her enjoyment of music was playing flute in the Bellevue Community Band, giving concerts throughout the year. Exercise was one of her favorite things to do, and she shared it with her son, Keith, working with him as a personal trainer. She was passionate about her family, self-care and personal growth, listening to others, and following her faith.
Laurie is preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brother, Thomas Nohl. Laurie is survived by her brothers and sister and their spouses Kathleen Nohl, Victor (Linda) Nohl, and Gregory (Lisa) Nohl. She is also survived by her children and their spouses Ryan (Rebecca) Hovis, Brent (Erika) Hovis, Melissa (Greg) Magdsick, and Keith (Morgan Ramey-Dixon) Hovis and her grandchildren, William, Sophia and Asher Hovis, Elise and Celeste Hovis, and Grace, Caleb, Jonathan, and Titus Magdsick. Laurie is also survived by former husband of 38 years, Bill Hovis.
A visitation with the family will be held on Friday, May 31st from 2-5pm at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am at Trinity West Seattle Church on June 1, 2024. A burial ceremony followed by a reception will occur at 11:30am at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery.

To celebrate Laurie’s love of glassybaby votives, and to represent the cancer community who benefits from their sales, you may bring your own glassybaby with a battery-operated tea light to the memorial service at Trinity. Candles may be placed near Laurie before the service. Please remember to label your votive with your name, and pick it up after the service.
