Ken was born in Seattle WA on December 2, 1927. He attended Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington where he earned a degree in Science and Electrical Engineering. While at the University of Washington he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and Zeta Mu Tau honoraries. As an electrical engineer, Ken worked for General Electric’s Lamp Division for 38 years.
During this time Ken and his wife Barbara lived in southern California for fifteen years then moved to Cleveland where they lived for over twenty years. They were both active with the American Field Service exchange program. Upon retirement, they spent two years trailer-traveling around the country before settling in Redmond WA first and moving to Seattle (Horizon House) in 2002.
Ken was an active Boy Scout earning his Eagle Scout rank and serving as a Camp Parsons staff member from 1945-47, Scout troop leader and participating in alumni activities. He and Barbara also enjoyed genealogy, Elderhosteling, travel, photography, reading, and museums as well as spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Ken is the son of Russell Horace Dean and Margret Mae Mead Dean. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Alice Gladfelter Dean; son Roger Perry Dean (Sandra Jean Chamerlik Dean) and daughter Jennifer Jo Dean Wright (Michael Anderson Wright); as well as grandsons James Tracy Wright and Eric Matthew Dean.
A Celebration of Life will be held November 5th at 2 o’clock in Anderson Hall, Horizon House, 900 University St., Seattle Washington. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Horizon House Resident Assistance Fund or a charity of your choice.
